1) MBSS is scheduled!
Kendall has informed us that a room has been booked (N7/1) and a date has been picked (Friday, October 13, 2017) for the symposium. There will be reminders of the event closer to its date but we hope to see you all there!
2) Summer GA
This past week the department held a GA and approved a few motions that are important to graduate students:
a) The stipend has been increased!
At the meeting, a motion was approved to increase the stipend of graduate students in the department. Starting Sept. 2018, the stipend will be raised an additional $2500 that students will receive in their second year of enrollment, identical to the $2500 given to incoming graduate students. The stipend will then be increased at a rate of 1% per year based on a cost of living estimate. While current students we will not benefit from the stipend increase, current students will receive an additional $400 in September 2017.
If you have any questions, feel free to send us (Alex and Michelle) any questions you may have. We’d also like to thank the stipend team (Sarah Baldwin, Sunci Avlijas and Fred Guichard & the GTC) for all the work you’ve put into this – I am positive everyone appreciates it!
b) New hires in the department
There are two new professors starting in the department in 2018. Dr. Arnold Hayer accepted his a position with the department and will begin in January 2018. Dr. Hayer comes to us from the University of Stanford and those that interviewed him seemed excited about his work engineering new techniques to examine collective cell migration. Dr. Jennifer Sunday also accepted her position with the department and will begin in April 2018. Dr. Sunday comes to us from UBC where her research focuses on how organisms and communities respond to climate change.
Here are their google scholar pages for those interested in their work:
At the GA there was also a motion to develop an offer for an assistant professor position for Dr. Abigail Gerhold in the department as a spousal hire. Dr. Gerhold is currently a postdoc at UdeM and would join the department in August 2018 if hired. Those that new Dr. Gerhold’s work seemed excited about her potential to join the department.
Sorry for the long email, but lots to cover this week!
Hope to see you on the camping trip!
